    Grackles are always getting into trouble, Jason, at least in this backyard.

    And how did he lose the tail in the first place?

    Oh, sorry. That was a bit of nerdish molting humor. Male great-tailed grackles lose their entire tail within a few days near the end of their molt, then it takes two weeks or so to grow it back. Their personalities are extremely subdued–practically meek–during the time they’re without a tail. But watch out once it grows back…

    Great info, I didn’t know that, thanks for posting it. I’ve never seen a meek grackle, I like how ornery they are.

    I have some images of juvenile grackles from earlier this year I’ll post sometime.
