Skinny legs and all
A gangly crane fly waits in a maze of angles.
They look like huge mosquitoes, but are harmless,
and most adults die soon after they mate.

This one looks like a bug that walks on the water of a pond that we swim in. The long legs are like threads – could it be this same bug, Rick?
I think what you saw was a water strider (or skimmer or skipper). They don’t fly, and walk on the surface of lakes and ponds. Quite cool, using surface tension to move around.
I haven’t taken a good picture of one yet, but someday . . .
This bug has the profile of a mosquito without the needle-like mouth. How big is it in comparison to a mosquito? I probably won’t be dreaming of this one.
A crane fly does look like a ginormous mosquito. This one was about an inch long, maybe almost two inches including the legs.
I remember these! And I remember not being afraid that they would bite like mosquitoes!
Nice closeup, for a nice bug!
Thanks Diane. I think most people don’t realize they are harmless, and very cool.
