National Center for Nature Photography exhibit
Wild Light Exhibit at the National Center for Nature Photography.

The National Center for Nature Photography will host Rick Lieder’s “Wild Light,” 90-plus images of the diverse beauty of Midwest animals and nature, including his filmmaking for PBS NOVA's "Creatures of Light", produced by National Geographic.

With minimal equipment and boundless vision and patience, Lieder shoots active portraits of finches and fireflies, fawns and swans, revealing the world of the creatures that live all around us, in our parks, ponds and backyards. The exhibit includes some of Lieder’s never before seen video, and more than a dozen paintings and illustrations.

Lieder’s work is featured in a series of stunning picture books—STEP GENTLY OUT, SWEEP UP THE SUN, AMONG A THOUSAND FIREFLIES, and the just-released WAKE UP!—with his co-author Helen Frost. He is working on a new book exploring the lives of Sandhill cranes. Signed copies of the books will be available during BugFest, Saturday, August 19th, and Lieder will offer several workshops/presentations during the course of the exhibit, which runs through the end of August.

Rick will be signing all his books. The best way is to order online through Rick's website, BugDreams.com.
Using Prime will get them to you before the reception. All signed books will also receive a free pen & ink drawing.

Come enjoy the beauty of “Wild Light” at the National Center for Nature Photography, with an opening Friday, June 9 from 5-8 pm. The exhibit is free to all, and the Center is located at Secor Metropark, at 10001 West Central Ave (US-20), outside Toledo in Berkey, OH, just 5 minutes West of US-23, and less than an hour from Ann Arbor.

On my way to the World Fantasy Convention 2015 in New York through next week.
I'm a special guest, curating an exhibition of artist Richard Powers paintings, along with panels, special displays and online features.
Powers was a giant of 20th century illustration, changing the way books were designed and presented.
Below is the cover of a small book I edited and designed just for the conference.

My exhibit and Step Gently Out book signing at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art April 6th
was so much fun, dozens of copies of Step Gently Out sold and signed,
and our presentation was very enthusiastically received.
Helen Frost has so many friends and supporters and the museum
was a great venue for our book.

A great review of Step Gently Out by Cory Doctorow on Boing Boing:
"Step Gently Out is children's picture book in which poet Helen Frost's verse accompanies the incredible garden insect photographs of artist/photographer Rick Lieder. I've written here many times about Rick's Bugdreams photos, and they never fail to impress and move me. Lieder's photographic portraits of bugs are all the sweeter for his method, which is to patiently crouch in his Michigan back-yard for hours and hours, waiting for the shot; it's a wonderful alternative to the traditional dead-bug-on-a-pin photos I grew up with."
"Frost's poem is a sweet accompaniment to Lieder's pictures, a very light narration for photos that really speak for themselves. We got this book this week, and it's a real favorite with me and my four-year-old, and has sparked many conversations and bug-watching expeditions on the way home from day-care. To this end, there's a nice entomological appendix with interesting facts about all the bugs featured in the book."
Thanks Cory! Read more.

Step Gently Out, my picture book with Helen Frost, will be showcased at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art this Friday, April 6th. I'll also be doing a multimedia presentation, including new video footage and still images, and answering any questions about the book.
"To celebrate this new work, Fort Wayne Museum of Art will have a book signing and an opening reception for an exhibition of the images from the book, which will be hanging in the Edward D. Auer Memorial Art Library."
If you're near Fort Wayne, please come by and say hello.
