Or, as some call them, lightning bugs. richard thompson who draws the cul de sac strip had an interesting thread on nomenclature some time ago, exploring the regional preferences for one or the other. Believe it or not, lightning bug won, though everyone knows it should be firefly. Lightning bug sounds like a dabbler, someone who hangs lights for holidays, enjoying the effect but not the lifestyle, while a firefly is devoted and consumed by illumination. Congratulations!
