Best Insect Photos of 2008

2 December 2008 5 Comments Home » Insects etc.

Received a nice surprise today, the Winter Ant image I posted this past spring was chosen as one of the Best Insect Photos of 2008 by Alex Wild, on his Myrmecos blog.

Alex is probably the best ant photographer around, so I’m quite honored. He works as a biologist on insect evolution at the University of Illinois and is a wonderful resource for insect photography, always sharing his knowledge and insights.

Thanks, CheyAnne. I do indeed have many firefly images, I spent much of the past summer working with them.

I’ll post some soon, and also news of a magazine feature coming early in 2009 featuring my firefly work.

    Congratulations!

And I’m looking forward to those firefly shots. Or, as some call them, lightning bugs. richard thompson who draws the cul de sac strip had an interesting thread on nomenclature some time ago, exploring the regional preferences for one or the other. Believe it or not, lightning bug won, though everyone knows it should be firefly. Lightning bug sounds like a dabbler, someone who hangs lights for holidays, enjoying the effect but not the lifestyle, while a firefly is devoted and consumed by illumination.

Thanks, Mark. I call them fireflies, but I heard lightning bug when I was growing up too.

Consumed by illumination is a nice phrase, I think it describes me when I’m photographing the fireflies.
